Fatal Migrations (2001–16)
The immense Sonoran Desert spans Mexico and the US. Both its heat and cold are deadly. Despite the active discouragement policy in the border town of Sásabe, many refugees risk their lives and head into this wilderness.
Daniel Alarcon enquires: ‘How do you convince people who have given everything and now fear nothing not to make this last journey? Especially not on foot. After being robbed, extorted, assaulted and abused, here they are. They have come so far, and the finish line is in sight. You cannot stop them.’
At least 2,600 migrants have died trying to make the perilous crossing to the US since 2001. Each circle in the interactive visualisation corresponds to the known location of someone’s death: a small cross on a giant map.
