Revolution
(Maastricht / Avenue Céramique 160)
Dutch artist Jacco Olivier is a professionally trained painter.
In For Real, however, he exhibits two totally different pieces of video: the twenty-four minute Revolution in Maastricht and the shorter video Saeftinghe in Hasselt. Both animations are constructed from many different layers of paint, and show a magical journey through a bizarre world that we only know from historical or fantasy stories.
The panoramic piece Revolution shows a journey through a selfcreated universe over a period of twenty-four minutes, where each minute symbolizes one hour. We travel along the empty darkness, through many bizarre celestial bodies, right past a yellow star and back to into the huge void.
For Olivier, the unknown universe is an ideal ‘story’ to visualize. His coarse and abstract paint strokes have a strong associative effect and create a convincing unique reality. Because, while we don’t see anything other than paint, transformed into a moving image, we gladly allow ourselves to be carried through the colourful and magical universe. A world where the artist has taken all liberties to play with paint materials, as well as the matter of the universe.
