Marina Abramovic (RS)

Mambo
(2003) 02.04 min.

(Maastricht / Brusselsestraat 114 Krakks) Indoor installation
In Mambo (version 2003), Marina Abramovic´ (Serbia, 1946) invites the visitor to dance the Mambo with her, just as she did when in 2003 during a three-hour performance, Abramovic´ danced on the same floor as the one in this room. Like the ten pairs of (male) shoes waiting for the visitor to put on, her red high heels were equipped with magnets. The magnets don’t make dancing easy, but because of the artist’s determination, her dance looks free and gracious. For the ‘dance partners’, it will be quite difficult to move as gracefully as Abramovic´ . It takes a lot of effort to move on this magnetic dancefloor. Mambo is based on the idea, just like many other works by Abramovic´ , that energy flows directly between the artist and the audience during a performance. By combining the use of video and objects, she tries to relive this energy exchange.
