This autumn, three large white billboards stand in Maastricht’s Stadspark. After sunset, mesmerising video artworks transform them and invite you to take a longer, closer and different look at remarkable insects from two Limburg

museum collections.

For (Re)animate, artists Driessens & Verstappen photographed over 4,000 endangered butterflies (many now extinct in the Netherlands), climate-sensitive dragonflies and exotic beetles from the collections of the Natural History Museum of Maastricht (NHMM) and the Mission Museum in Steyl. Invited by Viewmaster Projects, they have created three video artworks that bring the insects in the two entomological collections back to life.

The vast collections of insects, pinned long ago in drawers and display cases, provided the artists with a rich resource for conveying the dramatic decline in insect populations. Insects are becoming extinct much faster than other animals, with their biomass declining by three-quarters in just a few decades. At the same time, the number of non-native species in the Netherlands is increasing, with far-reaching consequences.

In three compelling video artworks, Driessens & Verstappen’s artistic vision captures key aspects of insect population decline: biodiversity loss, global warming and the increase in non-native species. For each part of the triptych, they have developed their own energy-efficient AI tools that reconfigure how these analogue heritage collections are presented and understood. This makes (Re)animate an extraordinary time-based media art installation whose distinctive visual language moves between the recognisable and the abstract.

An evening walk through the Stadspark takes visitors past projections that brilliantly illuminate the wondrous world of tiny insects.

Getting there

Admission to (Re)animate is free, and the project is fully accessible. Public footpaths and cycle lanes provide easy access to the project. To get a closer look and read the exhibition texts, visitors need to cross the grass. Parking is available on Henri Hermanspark or Sint-Hubertuslaan. Bus 10 stops at Prins Bisschopsingel, with connections to Randwijck station. From Central Station it is 24-minute walk or an eight-minute cycle.

[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][divider line_type=”Full Width Line” line_thickness=”1″ divider_color=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][image_with_animation image_url=”9722″ image_size=”full” animation_type=”entrance” animation=”None” animation_movement_type=”transform_y” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”30″][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/6″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
