Meditations (towards a remake of Soundings)
(Maastricht / Bassinkade 3)
Mediations (towards a remake of Soundings) is an updated version of the earlier work Soundings (1979) by Gary Hill (1951). In Mediations we see and hear a loudspeaker. As Hill is filling the hollow of the speaker with sand, he is commenting on the act and the effects it will engender. In tune with every nuance of his voice, the speaker vibrates, which makes the grains of sand bounce up. As Hill keeps mentioning his action, the image and especially the sound keep changing. Little the little, the timbre of his voice becomes more croaky and muffled. When the loudspeaker is entirely covered by sand, the voice sounds distant, but still remarkably clear. The work shows in a poetic and experiential way that sounds are in fact vibrations and that the space that the vibrations occupy can be meaningful.
Besides Mediations (towards a remake of Soundings) the work Primary by Gary Hill is on show in Heerlen on Willemstraat.
